Eric Stark marks his seventh year as artistic director of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. Under his leadership, the Choir has redoubled its commitment to performances of the highest possible quality...from established masterworks for chorus and orchestra, to dynamic new works from today's leading composers. As an interpreter of the major works for chorus and orchestra, he has earned a reputation for exciting, integrated performances that display dramatic and holistic unity. Under his direction, choirs and orchestras have performed such works as the Bach Christmas Oratorio, Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Mass in C, Mozart's Requiem, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem, the Poulenc Gloria and Britten's Saint Nicolas and War Requiem. Additionally, he has prepared the Choir for performances with such notable conductors as Mario Venzago, Raymond Leppard, Jahja Ling, Erich Kunzel, Jack Everly, Carl St. Clair, Jesus Lopez-Cobos and Harry Bickett. In 2006, Stark oversaw the release of "From East to West," the Symphonic Choir's first commercial CD in eight years. This marks the third commercial release of a choral compact disc recording under his musical leadership. In this short time, Stark has established a national reputation as a conductor and education, having conducted in New York's Carnegie Hall, at the division convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Chicago, and on national and international tours throughout the United Stats, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. Stark is Associate Professor of Music at Bulter University's Jordan College of Fine Arts, where he conducts the Butler chorale, teaches conducting and choral literature, and is head of the Vocal Music Department. He has served on the faculties of the Christian Theological Seminary, Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, and Earlham College. He earned his doctoral degree in choral conducting from Indiana University, where he was a student of Jan Harrington, Robert Porco and Thomas Dunn. A 1988 graduate of Wabash College, he is also a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight, a non-profit network of pilots providing free air transportation for those with medical needs. |
