2010 Christmas Carol Commission Competition
"Mary with Jesus" is a beautiful and introspective portrayal of an ancient Muslim text revealing the innermost thoughts of Mary regarding her unborn child, Jesus. This work innovatively unites the traditions of Islam and Christianity.
SATB choir, Mezzo-soprano soloist "There is God " With text adapted from the Latin "Ubi Caritas" of the Mandatum on Maundy Thursday in the Christian tradition, this piece was written to honor Mary Jo Moss, longtime singer and board member of the Symphonic Choir. James Quitman Mulholland is on the faculty of Butler University (Indianapolis) where the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir is in residence.
SATB choir "From East to West " Written to honor Indianapolis Symphonic Choir accompanist Charles Manning on the occasion of his 25th anniversary with the organization, "From East to West" features text from Liturgia Horarum by fifth century Christian poet Coelius Sedulius. Through appropriate use of dance-like mixed meter and a contrasting homophonic hymn-like section, this work impresses audiences and highlights an advanced accompanist.
SATB choir "Transcendental Sonnets " Composer Eric Gann expresses a particular fondness with Transcendentalism through his setting of texts by Jones Very. This multi-movement work for chorus, orchestra and tenor and soprano soloists is approximately 40 minutes in length.
